Have I bitten off more than I can chew?

Look before you leap should be my motto but I am impulsive.

This morning I was reflecting on a post I made on May 3, Elusive Events, in which I wrote "I dream of an online calendar that lists all events that may be suitable for budding and experienced  Australian genealogists. Something based on the Geneawebinars Blog would seem to fit the bill...but who will take responsibility for such a resource?"

That post attracted a number of comments one of which from  Elizabeth O'Neal said..."The only way to find out is to give it a try". I also thank Judy Webster who gave some useful tips in a comment on that Elusive Events post, as I get going  I will  employ these.

I set up a blog, GeniAusEvents and let it rest. This morning when I was fiddling with my Google calendars I thought I may as well give it a go. So I set up GeniAusEvents Google calendar, added a couple of events and pasted the code at the bottom of my template. The calendar will be visible at the bottom of each page of this blog. Hey presto, another blog is born.

I am not promising that this will be a comprehensive list but, as I monitor quite a few mailing lists, blogs and twitter I hear about a number of things that may be of use.

The focus of this blog will be events of interest to Australian Genealogists including conferences, excursions, family reunions, lectures, open days and seminars. This is by no means a comprehensive list but a listing of events that I come across on my genealogical journey. As I live in NSW it may have a bias towards that state.

Blogs should be collaborative in nature so I hope that my GeniMates will let me know via Facebook, email, Twitter (@geniaus)  or comments on this or the Geniaus blog of events to be included in the calendar. In time I may consider giving some GeniMates access to the blog to add their own events.

This blog will not become an advertising vehicle for commercial enterprises. Facilitating it is my mode of volunteering and giving back to the generous genealogy community.

I will trial this blog for a few months and if the task is too onerous or I don't have sufficient content I will call it quits. I hope that won't be the case.

Nothing ventured, Nothing Gained is another motto of mine.

  2. Gosh, what a fabulous endeavour!

Are you interested in NZ events too?

You can pick up events from the Auckland Research Centre lunchtime sessions here:
    regularly updated

Or our Facebook page for other events that don't fit into the lunchtime session series

Good luck with this, its a great idea!

  3. Seonaid,

I'll see how I go. I think your lunchtime sessions sound fantastic.

I'll do a bit more data entry for Aus and then move across the ditch.

It' easy to find your events as you do such a great job of publicising them.

  4. Thanks Geniaus, I'm looking forward to following this new blog and calendar

  5. Good on ya! What a useful endeavour for your Aussie genea-community It won't be long before your retirement will be busier than your work life ever was!

  6. This is great Geniaus.

Are you interested in events in Northern NSW? They may be advertised elsewhere, does that matter?

  7. Tanya,

Sure am. I have put a few in for that region already. I am trying to concentrate on those hosted by libraries, archives and societies first. Those from commercial organisations will be second priority.
